Mitt Romney handily won the first Republican presidential debate, according to an Internet poll sponsored by NewsMax.com. Nearly half of respondents – 47 percent – picked the former Massachusetts governor as the winner of last week’s debate. He far outdistanced Rudy Giuliani, who finished second with 14 percent of the vote. Surprisingly, little-known candidate Ron Paul outpolled John McCain, who is considered one of the front-runners.
Mitt Romney: 47 percent
Rudy Giuliani: 14 percent
Ron Paul: 11 percent
Tom Tancredo: 7 percent
John McCain: 7 percent
Duncan Hunter: 5 percent
Mike Huckabee: 4 percent
Sam Brownback: 2 percent
Tommy Thompson: 2 percent
James Gilmore: 1 percent
